Lettuce!!

Our garden is wonderful! We actually have had enough lettuce to have 2 large salads now, and it tastes great! I am so surprised that we actually grew vegetables from seed! In the next few weeks we plan on building our raised garden bed and planting seeds for our winter garden.

We painted the chicken coop boards white. Gavin even helped us out and had a great time! Sean and my Dad got the frame put up! Woohoo!! Things are coming along great! Good thing too, we now have 6 chickens coming!! Sean will be working on the coop part of it this weekend (as long as it doesn't rain. We got some old shutters for free and plan to use them to make the coop.

Until Next Time:-)

OUR COOP HAS WALLS!

Sean is really getting some good progress done on our chicken coop! It is looking great! These are the two side walls. They will be covered with chicken wire and attached to the coop/shed.

Our Garden is growing!

Our bucket garden is looking great! It has been so fun to watch our seeds grow.  Tonight we used our basil and parsley in our pasta and it was great! We are going to eventually make a much larger raised garden bed in front of the chicken coop.  All in good time:-).

Our chickens have just been born!  We won't get them home until the first week of September.  Not quite sure which ones are ours...but I know that our 4 girls are in there somewhere!!

Sean officially started building our coop run today!  Gavin and Allegra thought it was fun to help...well at least to use the boards as a balance beam ;-). We are going to use our existing shed for the coop.  We'll just make a few changes to it, and the run will be a fully enclosed 5x10.

And as far as our newly green plans...I have successfully not brought in even 1 plastic bag into our home this month!  We have also been working on our minimalist plan for our home.  We have shed tons of stuff we didn't need!  It feels great!!  We still have a long way to go...but one step at a time!

Stay Green! :-)

They are sprouting!

I was so excited to see that our carrots and lettuce are finally starting to sprout! They are very hard to see in the pictures...you have to look hard for the little green sprouts. My kids were getting very bored of looking at the dirt...and waiting for something to happen. It has been a good weekend. We got some of our kitchen cleared out. We'll have so much to donate! Taking small steps in our getting greener lives!

Until Next Time

I love Goodwill!

I went to Goodwill looking for some glass bottles to put bulk food in. I found all of these for under $10.00! I need to shop for all of my stuff there. I also remembered to refuse the plastic bag and I carefully loaded them into my van and got them all home safe in one piece! :-) (They are all wet in the picture because I just finished washing them...for the second time.)

We planted another "Bucket Garden". This time we didn't start from seed. I got some Basil from the Farmer's Market, and some Flat Leaf Parsley and a Pepper Plant from Lowes (cheaper from the Farmer's Market by the way).

My goal for the rest of this month is to not bring another plastic bag into this house. (Although plastic can be recycled, it is a much more time consuming and difficult process than recycling glass or metal.) Sean has to remind me to take baby steps...I tend to jump into things and want to do it all right away.

I also had to throw in a picture of Sean's "Laptop Lunchbox" all loaded up. He thought at first that it wouldn't be enough food for him, but he has found out that it is actually plenty! Score!!

Until Next Time
